US lawmakers: The essence of Libra has not changed and still falls under the category of securities.
Recently, a council member from Houston, Texas, who is also a member of the House Financial Service Committee, expressed views on the latest version of the Libra project. The council member pointed out that although Libra has been updated, its essence remains unchanged, still serving as a tool for obtaining value from a "currency basket". According to the standards of the Howey test, this nature categorizes Libra as a security.
This politician emphasized that the latest adjustments to Libra have not fundamentally changed its attributes as a stablecoin. In response to the latest announcement released by the project party, he expressed his views:
"Currently, there are still many unresolved questions surrounding the necessity of developing this cryptocurrency and the potential impact it may have on the global economy and consumers. I will continue to closely monitor developments in this field and work to ensure that relevant regulatory bodies can appropriately regulate such assets under existing securities laws."
This statement reflects the regulatory authorities' ongoing vigilance towards emerging financial technologies. Although the Libra project is continuously adjusting to meet regulatory requirements, its core concept still raises concerns among regulatory agencies. As cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology continue to evolve, finding a balance between innovation and regulation will be a persistent challenge for policymakers.
